What exactly happened and what can we do now?
Here in the USA today?

An important question to ask is - "What got us here in the first place?"
Mainly Liberalism happened! Which is the thief of the working class efforts (money) placed into politician pet{paid} projects and made to look like the people are better off...
The main tenant of liberalism is more government, followed by more government and then even more government. They believe that they can all their stuff done using other people's money (taxes) and get credit for it to stay in power...

The American people are frustrated and lied to and don't know what to do. How did this happen?
They have almost a complete lack of any real understanding as to how the Fed Gov't works. Why?
For the past 50 years we have handed our education system over to liberal {so called free thinkers or that is what they say} party...
Then when education doesn't perform like it was supposed to {after they changed it - by replacing God with other false worldly pursuits!} They just want to pour even more $ billions into it. It sounds good and it feels good but does it work in the real world???
You can never get a fire under control by pouring even more fuel on it! DUH!
You have to cut back and conserve...
Because most people are basically lazy, and greedy, and tend to just sit back and have a good time in life! Yet this does not lead to any productive positive development!
Don't believe me or any one else check it out for yourself...
Do your own research to see if this works.
If or when we do eventually implode, consider who we would want to be around when we need to pick up the pieces.
*** Conservatism under a republic, where a constitution regulates freedoms and allows for adjustments to keep nation in a safe condition.
Liberlism is a run away popular demoracy - where very one tries to get all they can from everyone!

Do you see how the demoracy never works on it 's own for very long?
Read and study the 10 principles of conservatism and realize also that government is essentially parasitical. It feeds off the success of its people.
Government naturally wishes to perpetuate itself and eventually government will consume its host.
Basically unchecked it eats itself! Just like people on Dope - Drugs, or other destructive actions gambling, chasing all manner of homosexual sexual pleasures - only leads to failure...
** Just look at all the hospitals and medical clinics treating these people!
