Life is not about a system of Rewards t

He Rewards Even Little Things

April 30th

Matthew 10:42, 'And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple,
verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.'

MATTHEW 10:1-42, 11:1, MARK 6:7-13, LUKE 9:1-6

This verse shows that even our smallest acts of kindness will be rewarded. As revealed in 1 Corinthians 3:13, every man's work shall be tried to determine 'what sort it is,' not what size it is. Many people who have never done anything to gain the attention of the masses will shine bright in the day when the Lord passes out His rewards.
Some of the Lord's rewards for our actions come in this life, such as children, financial blessings, health, and many others. However, some of our rewards will not be realized until we stand before God. This is the case with the reward for enduring persecution.
Many of the rewards for ministering the Gospel will not come until we appear before the Lord. Rewards can be shared by those who aid others in their righteous tasks.
The ungodly who are not in the Kingdom of God will receive no rewards even though some of their actions might have been good.
{Many of the things that seem good here on earth will not count in Eternity! Note by Blogger}
Rewards are only for those who have been cleansed from their evil deeds by the blood of the Lamb.
Regardless of what these rewards shall be, there will not be any exalting of self over others. 'For who maketh thee to differ from another?
And what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?' (1 Cor. 4:7)
The twenty-four elders in Revelation 4:10 are shown casting their crowns (which were rewards) down before the Lord and giving all their praise and worship to Him. It's all because of Him.

Thank Him today for His goodness.

Life is Tempory Part 1

Life is Tempory Part 1

Our Earthly existence is about how we lived and loved those whom God placed upon our pathway!
All we see here upon the earth is temporary!
Life is limited, and only a brief period, it is all about how you live it!
It does not matter what we have nor how we look to others here on earth because it is all about what we did in this lifetime!
It will all be gone in a flash once we leave this earthly existence!

** This part is from a recent FB post:

Thank you - Kim!

Have you ever thought about the fact our bodies are just a vessel and have nothing to do with our identity, our soul, or really who we are as a person?

I was just thinking about it and thinking about how we ride places in a car or live in a house but when things break down in our car or house, we don't take that on as part of our identity or really even let it affect us as far as our personality or attitude toward other things in life.

Our bodies are much the same as our homes and cars, only we are in them all the time. When our bodies are sick, it is just the vessel that is sick, not my soul and when we have arthritis or other issues or can't walk nor see nor hear, it's just the body that's broken not our soul. When we die, it's just our body that dies.

Our soul moves on to another place, Heaven if we belong to the Lord. One day our body and soul will be completely separate because we will need the temporary vessel no more. I was just thinking about and praying for a friend of mine who is battling cancer and thinking how she's had some pretty tough days as far as pain and sickness in her body but how she has been so amazing through the grace of God about not letting it affect her spirit, and it got me to thinking about this: how separate our bodies are from our spirit and soul...from who we really are.

She hasn't let what is going on with her body affect who she is. We have to put up with their shortcomings while we're in them (just like a car) and we have to take care of them too (same as with a car), but I think if we can just grasp how separate they are from who we really are (they are just a vessel), maybe we wouldn't let them hold us back so much or interfere with the confidence and faith or even the work that our soul and spirit has. I know I'm probably weird, but that's what was on my mind.

 {Continuued by Blogger}

** {Actually we are Spirit, Soul, and body! While the Spirit never dies, it is connected to God - our body dies, yet will be resurrected in the final judgment! Our Soul or "Will or decision-making abilities" is where we actually lived in this life (Good or Bad)!}
Will post more on this relationship in later Blogs!

 > I greatly disagree with the " popular " term today as to " What's Trending? "
 Because really - Who cares?
Being Popular does not make it right or good!
I was not sent here on earth to follow or make others happy!
A significant problem in the world today, especially with the modern fad generation within the massive public media system, is people who just follow without thinking! Anything and everything goes!

Why?  Because many have made little use of their God-given intelligence nor do they fully understand why they have foolishly followed popular trends or people!
It is sad to only be a tag along in life!

Most of the people's lives are based upon who, what or where, or when they spent their time. While there is a need to use our God Given Intelligence and our moral compass in the pathway we chart in this life - it is still temporary and fleeting at best!
Who would want to be the best person in Hell?

When you reach the final Judgment - what will you reply to the question as to "whom did you follow?"
As for me, I follow the Lord God Almighty!
Not the temporary stuff of the trending world!

 Amen!

Persecution

About Persecution

April 27th

Matthew 10:23, 'But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.'

MATTHEW 10:16-26

Persecution is an inevitable part of the Christian life. Persecution is from Satan and is designed to uproot God's Word in our lives by taking our eyes off Jesus. We should not think it is strange to be persecuted. 'All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution' (2 Tim. 3:12).
We can actually rejoice because we are being persecuted, for Jesus' sake, knowing that the Lord will be with us in the midst of the persecution and that there will be more than ample reward when we stand before Him (Heb. 11:26).

Persecution is an indication that the ones doing the persecuting are under conviction. They realize that they are not living what your words or actions are advocating and so, in defense of self, they attack the ones whom they perceive to be the source of their conviction. If this is understood, it makes persecution much easier to take. They aren't just mad at you; they are convicted. When the Gospel is presented in the power of the Holy Spirit, there will always be either a revival or a riot, but not indifference.

There are many forms of persecution. Having your life threatened because of your faith in Jesus is one way you can be persecuted, but it is not the most damaging. History shows that the Church has always flourished under persecution with increased numbers and zeal. During intense, life-threatening persecution, people's priorities get straightened out and the Lord assumes His rightful place. This always works for our good, regardless of what our outward circumstances might be. Remember it is not you that they are persecuting, but rather Christ in you.

Super foods? Where?

Food marketers know that if they call their product a superfood, it’s sure to sell. Take quinoa, for example. In the early aughts, when the ancient grain first became trendy, quinoa prices tripled in the span of five years. (Many Bolivians, who had relied on it as a food staple for centuries, were soon priced out of the market.) The moral here: it’s important to question anything knighted with the superlative.
From a health perspective, many dietitians would prefer we do away with the label completely. “There’s just not enough substantiated evidence that there are superfoods, that these foods solve the problems they say they’re going to solve,” says Suzanne Smith, a registered dietitian at the University of California, San Diego. Smith worries that since many of these so-called superfoods are expensive, they add financial stress to people already struggling to buy healthy food. Furthermore, no single food can undo an otherwise poor diet.
But here’s the thing: some really do stack up. A few have “near-medicinal-like qualities,” says Shawn Talbott, a biochemist, fellow at the American College of Sports Medicine, and author of The Secret Of Vigor. To him, food is super if eating a normal quantity can deliver a research-backed benefit.
The trick is knowing how to separate the good stuff from the chaff. With that in mind, we asked a few dietitians and researchers to help us rank some of this decade’s buzziest ingredients. Consider this your license to stop choking down kimchi and gluten-free bread and start hitting the blueberries and red wine hard.

21. Gluten-Free Flours

If you thought eliminating gluten was your ticket to reducing inflammation, bloating, and losing weight, think again. Unless you have celiac disease or suffer from true gluten intolerance (example: you are doubled over and running for the bathroom post-pizza), there are no proven physical benefits from going gluten-free. A 2012 paper in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that there was not a single study connecting gluten-free diets to weight loss in nonceliac populations. It also pointed to studies that showed limiting gluten negatively affected gut flora populations, while diets high in gluten resulted in a lowering of triglycerides and blood pressure. If you can firmly trace your stomach woes to eating gluten (preferably through doing a two-week elimination diet), then gluten-free flours may be a superfood for you. But for the vast majority of Americans, they’re nothing but expensive, unhealthy substitutions.

20. Orange Juice

“Have a glass of orange juice!” It’s the cry eternal of well-meaning friends and parents when you’re under the weather. They aren’t totally wrong: vitamin C may help immune systems. A 2014 study in the journal Nutrients found that men who were low in vitamin C caught fewer colds once they increased their vitamin C consumption, but the difference was deemed statistically marginal. Furthermore, another 2014 study published in Clinical Nutrition found that drinking orange juice didn’t lead to a strengthening of the immune system for healthy, well-nourished adults. So getting enough vitamin C is important, but slamming a gallon of orange juice won’t help—it contains too much sugar. Instead, try red peppers, broccoli, or kale, which all have more vitamin C per serving than orange juice. Plus, they have more fibre and other nutrients.

19. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is the new snake oil. You’ll find it included in the ingredient list of nearly every “health” food, from packaged granola to energy bars to Bulletproof Coffee. The big hype behind coconut oil is that it contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which could help our bodies burn more fat. However, at least for now, it’s best to view research on MCT with skepticism: a 2015 review of studies on MCT supplementation found that while most research did show some sort of weight loss, the studies were often flawed or commercial bias was present. The researchers concluded: “Further research is required by independent research groups using large, well-designed studies to confirm the efficacy of MCT and to determine the dosage needed for the management of a healthy body weight and composition.”

18. Chia Seeds

Many runners began incorporating these small seeds into their diet after Christopher McDougall’s 2009 bestseller, Born to Run, described them as nutritionally equivalent to a mix of “salmon, spinach, and human growth hormone.” But a few recent studies—like one in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and one in the journal Nutrients—have found that the seeds offer runners no performance benefit. Talbott says these popular seeds are good from a “general nutrition” standpoint. That is, they provide macronutrients—including omega-3s—but there isn’t much super about chia seeds beyond that.

17. Kimchi

This pickled Korean dish has been recently hailed as a superfood due to its high probiotic content. However, Talbott says our understanding of how probiotics work is just too rudimentary to call kimchi—or any food whose main selling point is probiotics—a superfood. “Probiotics are like the Wild West; no one really knows what’s best,” he says. A 2007 review on probiotics published in the journal Current Sports Medicine Reports found that, at least for athletes, “scientific evidence for an ergogenic effect of probiotics is lacking.” Still, the super-funky condiment is made up of all healthy things, like cabbage, garlic, ginger, and daikon. If you love it, go ahead and eat it, but it’s too soon to start stocking up.

16. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes have become the darling of endurance athletes looking for a natural fuel source, but the types of good carbohydrates that you can get from a sweet potato can be found in any number of other whole foods, like bananas, oatmeal, or dates. If you like sweet potatoes—and they are admittedly delicious—there’s no problem with eating them. Just know there’s nothing super about them.

15. Almonds

While almonds are great, Talbott takes issue with their designation as a superfood. Most nuts are created equal, he says. They’re healthy and full of good fats, and research shows that regular nut eaters tend to have healthier weights. Almonds are no more super than their other nut relatives.

14. Beets

While most of us have heard that beet juice can help with oxygen uptake, Talbott thinks the ergogenic benefits of this plant have been largely overblown. Research on the topic is all over the place: in a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, beet juice didn’t improve the performance of cyclists. But in a 2014 paper, beet juice did improve cycling performance in athletes at altitude. And in 2015, another study found no benefits from beet juice for runners at altitude. So the jury’s still out on the exact performance benefits of this vegetable, but the bottom line is that many of the antioxidants in beets are available in other fruits and veggies like lettuce, spinach, and strawberries.

13. Acai

“It’s basically the Brazilian blueberry,” says Talbott. Like blueberries, acai berries are full of great antioxidants (and absolutely delicious). But they are expensive and hard to find. Because of this, research on acai’s benefits is still sparse. You’re better off just buying frozen blueberries for your smoothie.

12. Eggs

“This is where I draw the line between healthy foods and superfoods,” says Talbott. Eggs are great—they’re full of protein and vitamins and minerals, plus they’re cheap—but they’re not actively working to lower your blood pressure, fight cancer, or make you smarter. Eat them often, but if you don’t like their taste or the sulphur smell, don’t sweat it.

11. Tart Cherry Juice

There is good research showing that tart cherry juice can relieve post-exercise muscle soreness and may even help prevent post-race colds in endurance athletes. But it’s relatively low on our list of superfoods because it’s such a specialized use. Sure, some athletes may see benefits, but most people would be better off using turmeric for relieving daily aches and pains and post-exercise soreness. Plus, tart cherry juice is expensive, and if you get the real, no-sugar-added variety, it’s more sour than sweet.

10. Broccoli

If you’re surprised to see broccoli and not kale on our list, don’t be. Broccoli is cheap, full of fibre and vitamins, and contains sulforaphane, a compound that actually helps cells fight cancer. Sure, it smells like a fart while steaming, but “broccoli activates pathways inside the cell so the cell starts creating its own antioxidants,” explains Talbott. Recent research has shown that some organs respond better than others to broccoli’s anticancer properties, but the fact that any of them respond at all is pretty remarkable.

9. Coffee

“It makes me shake my head when I hear people say they’re trying to quit coffee,” says Talbott. Sure, too much of it isn’t good for you, but at the right dose, coffee does have real benefits. “Caffeine is the most-researched performance product on the planet, and it has the same [beneficial] flavonoid content as tea.” Plus, there’s research showing regular coffee drinkers may have a lower risk for dementia, diabetes, and maybe even Parkinson’s.

8. Apples

That “apple a day” adage is not total bunk. The flavonol quercetin makes these boring old fruits worth adding back into your lunchbox: quercetin has been shown to lower blood pressure, open blood vessels, and improve endurance athletic performance.

7. Green Tea

This ancient beverage has been recently co-opted by the diet industry, which makes it seem gimmicky. While green tea diet pills are certainly worth being wary of, plain green tea is not. There is research showing that it can boost your basic metabolic rate by 3 to 4 percent, “and it’s profoundly anticancer,” says Talbott, thanks to compounds called catechins. In fact, research in the journal Cancer Prevention found that daily green tea consumption could delay the onset of cancer by more than seven years for women and three years for men. A large-scale population study published earlier this year in Cancer Science followed nearly 90,000 Japanese citizens for more than a decade and found that those who drank large amounts of green tea had lower risks for biliary tract cancer, gallbladder cancer, and bile duct cancer.

6. Black Beans

If you compare the diets of every culture with a beyond-average life expectancy—including the original Blue Zones of Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California—the one shared food tradition is a hearty dose of legumes. “They’re high in fibre, iron, and B vitamins,” says Talbott and research has shown that diets rich in legumes (plus lean meats and vegetables) can lower your risk of developing cardiovascular disease and your total risk of morbidity from all causes. While all legumes are worth including in your diet, black beans are packed with polyphenols, giving them an extra nutrient boost.

5. Dark Chocolate

To get the reported benefits from chocolate, Talbott says you really need to eat the super-dark stuff—70 percent cocoa or higher. Studies have shown that just a few ounces can deliver a heart-healthy dose of flavonols that lower LDL cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar levels, and improve blood flow. Plus, as we all anecdotally know, there’s research showing that eating chocolate can boost your mood.

4. Red Wine

Go ahead and rejoice: it is evidence-based research showing that wine may have anti-inflammatory and blood pressure–lowering benefits, thanks to the polyphenol micronutrient called resveratrol, which research has linked to a host of cardiovascular benefits (although many of these studies were performed on rodents, not humans). A 2009 review in the Journal of Nutrition found a significant body of research pointing to a lowered risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality for populations that consume resveratrol-rich foods such as red wine. If you aren’t an alcohol connoisseur, a serving of red grapes may be just as good. Although be wary of resveratrol supplements: one study was actually suspended because participants reported kidney complications. Not that you’d ever want to skip that glass of red wine for a pill, of course.

3. Salmon

The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which help boost brain and heart health, respectively. “Omega-3s help with blood vessel compliance and have a nice blood-thinning effect,” which can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, says Talbott. A 2012 paper published in Epidemiologic Review found that women who increased their fish intake, including salmon, late in life had significantly fewer incidences of coronary heart disease. Additionally, salmon’s DHA—which you can get only through diet since your body does not naturally produce it—acts as a membrane to neurons in the brain, protecting them from damage or inflammation. A 2015 meta-review in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Review found that an increase in fish consumption could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by more than 30 percent.

2. Turmeric

This powder, which comes from the rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant, has been used in ancient medicine and Southeast Asian cuisine for centuries. Turmeric’s clearest benefit is that “it is profoundly anti-inflammatory,” says Talbott, thanks to curcumin, a natural polyphenol that also gives the powder its bright yellow hue. The body of research on turmeric is fairly deep, with several large-scale studies, and turmeric may have more benefits than researchers yet realize—early results from one small study in the UK showed a potential for turmeric to change gene expression in a way that might help fight cancer. Talbott says it’s best to eat turmeric at a suggested dose of one-fourth teaspoon three times a day along with some fibre and fat for maximum absorption. (He sprinkles turmeric on sandwiches, adds it to salad dressing, and even puts it in his coffee.) A word of caution: turmeric is very pungent.

1. Blueberries

“It almost sounds ridiculous to list the research-backed benefits you can get from blueberries,” Talbott says, pointing to their ability to lower your risk for heart disease, reduce joint and muscle pains, and curtail oxidative stress (the naturally occurring stress produced by cell respiration). Blueberry’s power comes from the compound oligomeric proanthocyanidins, and Talbott says that you don’t need a ton of it to get results: a half-cup per day of fresh or frozen blueberries results in a “significant longevity benefit.” Plus, there’s plenty of research showing that blueberries can reduce post-exercise stress and inflammation among athletes. As for the general population, in 2013, researchers revealed that—at least for women—getting three servings of berries per week cut heart attack risks by one-third.

STRATEGY - Why it is wrong

5 Myths About Strategy:

There are lies, there are big lies, and then there are myths.  And myths are the worst of the three.
Unless you have sealed yourself off in a social media echo chamber, lies are easy to spot.  Except, that is, when the lie is a big one.  People hearing or reading big lies start to doubt themselves and think ‘maybe I have got things completely wrong’.  That’s why politicians and propagandists tell big lies. They’re not trying to assert a truth so much as sow doubt and confusion about what is true.  That’s bad, but a smart person can resist a big lie by looking at the evidence at hand.
Myths present a different, subtler trap, which is what makes even smart people fall for them.  They are usually based on a plausible half-truth, and they do not immediately lead you astray if you start to act on them.  It’s only with the passage of time that you realize that you’ve made a mistake, but by then your wrong choices can’t be unmade and the damage is done.
We encounter myths in most realms of human endeavour, and the discipline of strategic thinking is no exception.   Here are five of the most pernicious ones I’ve encountered in a long career studying strategy and advising companies about it:

Myth 1: Strategy is about the long-term
Why it’s plausible
In some industries, the basis of competition can remain unchanged for decades, and leaders who stick to their strategy through downturns as well as upturns and ignore surface noise do very well.
Why it’s wrong
It is precisely when long-held assumptions about an industry are challenged that strategic changes happen. And you will need to make those changes very quickly.  Thinking about strategy as some kind of long-term commitment can blind you to that need Strategy is not about the long term or the short term, but about the fundamentals of how the business works: the sources of value creation, the drivers of the cost to deliver it, and the basis of competition.  To get a grip on strategy, we do not need to lengthen the time horizon of our thinking, but its depth. Far from being about things we are going to do in the future, strategy is about what we are going to do now in order to shape the future to our advantage.

Myth 2: Disruptors change strategy all the time
Why it’s plausible
It looks as if Amazon and the platform giants like Google and Facebook keep changing strategy because they use the massive amounts of cash they generate to innovate, bringing out new products and services every year. Innovation is easily confused with a change in strategic direction, and sometimes it does indeed trigger such a change.
Why it’s wrong
In the case of Amazon and the rest of Big Tech, most of the innovative new products and services reflect a single, consistent strategy, one that’s been familiar to business people since at least the 1960s.  That’s when Bruce Henderson, the founder of BCG, observed that in many businesses, costs decline by a predictable amount with every doubling of cumulative volume. The implication was that by pricing ahead in anticipation of those cost declines, a company could sacrifice current margins to gain share, achieve market leadership and then reap the gains. The strategy was captured in the imperative: ‘Cut price and add capacity’. That’s basically what today’s platform businesses are doing – though do they use more jazzy vocabulary like ‘blitzscaling’ or ‘hypergrowth’ and add some twists.  For today’s platform businesses for instance, the imperative could be called ‘Give it away and add users’.  But it’s just a more radical version of a strategy that’s more than half a century old.

Myth 3: Competitive advantage is dead
 Why it’s plausible
There is evidence that the time period over which advantage can be sustained is shortening, which suggests that achieving defensibility is harder, which in turn implies that barriers are more flimsy and easier to surmount.   One market observer notes that average tenure in the S&P 500 has fallen from 33 years in 1964 to 24 years in 2016.
Why it’s wrong
Reports of the death of competitive advantage are vastly exaggerated.  The competitive advantages of Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are so massive and the barriers to overcoming them so high, that public discussion of them revolves around the use of regulation to break them up to reduce their power.  In a very short time, it has become hard to imagine how market forces alone could tame them.  The full truth is not that competitive advantage is dead, but that you need to rely on multiple advantages rather than just the one.   And part of the reason that Amazon & Co will be hard to unseat is that they have realized this.  They are not betting on a building a single big wall, but on building up lots of smaller ones.

Myth 4: You don’t really need a strategy; you just need to be agile
Why it’s plausible
Agile firms – especially start-ups – are always turning on a dime and they certainly don’t seem to be following any kind of plan.  Easy enough, then, to assume that what you see an agile firm doing – acting at high speed, maintaining a high tempo, being highly responsive – is all there is.
Why it’s wrong
Agility is not a strategy.  It is a capability, a very valuable one which has immediate operational benefits, but that cannot permanently affect a firm’s competitive position unless there is a strategist taking the right decisions about where to direct that capability.  And the seeming absence of a plan doesn’t mean that successful start-ups don’t have strategies.  A strategy is not a plan, it is a framework for decision-making, a set of guiding principles which can be applied as the situation evolves.  And most start-ups fail because being able to turn on a dime doesn’t mean that you’ll turn in the right direction.  Successful start-ups actually do a lot of hard thinking about fundamentals, questioning and testing basic assumptions with a rigour that incumbents would do well to emulate.   Start-ups have to, because their resources are extremely scarce.  If they don’t have a coherent strategy, they will make poor resource allocation decisions, and for them that will not mean a fall in earnings, but death.

Myth 5: You need a digital strategy
Why it’s plausible
Digital technology is a way of collecting, storing and using information, and information is everywhere. In its early stages, it enabled us to do what we did already rather better.  Then it enabled us to do it a lot better.  Then it enabled us to do things we had never done before.  Now the possibilities are exhilarating but also confusing.  When people feel confused, they look for a way of sorting things out, making sense of them and deciding what to do.  Hence the call for a digital strategy.

Why it’s wrong
A company is an organism, and if you try to optimise the parts you will sub-optimise the whole.  You don’t want a strategy for digital, IT, finance, HR or anything else – just a strategy for the business.  So don’t imagine you can develop a strategy for the digital part of your business and leave the rest alone.  Digital technology and the more specific technologies to which it gives rise fundamentally change the sources of customer value and the cost of delivering it.  The way to address digital is to think through and lay out all the fundamental assumptions you have about how your business works and ask yourself if they are still valid.  And that’s what strategy has always been about.
In our uncertain world, fundamentals are changing so we need to think about them, whether they are valid in the short- or long-term.

Think how you can deploy the capabilities you have and build new ones you need to defend your competitive position. Add them in layers to create barriers. Be clear about what will make a difference so that you can make rapid resource allocation decisions. Be on the lookout for the emergence of unexpected events at the customer interface that point to opportunities that can be deliberately exploited.  Play to win the short games that will enable you to prevail in the long ones. Think deep to act fast. Strategy is still what it has always been: the art of taking action under the pressure of the most difficult conditions.

Commentary Mark 5:26 to 43 Miracles

Mark 5:26

Note on Mark 5:26
See Adam Clarke’s Commentary and People’s NT Commentary for a list of some physicians’ cures of this woman’s day. Suffice it to say that the medical treatments of this time were superstitious at best and barbaric at worst. I believe that if the Lord tarries and people look back on our medical treatments today, they will think just as badly of our treatments as we do of the medical treatments of this woman’s time.
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 3 at Mark 5:26: The Greek word for “suffered” here is “PASCHO,” and it is also used to describe the sufferings of our Lord (Matthew 16:21, 17:12; and 1 Peter 2:23). This is in sharp contrast to the Greek word “EAO.” This was also translated “suffered” and “suffer” but simply means to “permit” (Strong’s Concordance) (Matthew 24:43; Luke 4:41, 22:51; Acts 14:16, 16:7; and 1 Corinthians 10:13). This woman had willfully submitted herself to treatments, which tormented her and took her money for twelve years, simply because there was no alternative.
When Jesus came on the scene offering the sure cure for her problem, it was not unreasonable for this woman to press through the crowd even on her hands and knees (see note 1 at Matthew 9:20) and suffer the shame and possible condemnation of the crowd for breaking the Levitical Law (see note 4 at Mark 5:33). She had endured much worse things pursuing man’s help in vain. Many people would do well to consider the expense and pain they have submitted themselves to at the hands of physicians and put at least an equal amount of effort into prayer, fasting, Bible study, or whatever it takes to release the healing power of God.

Mark 5:27

Note on Mark 5:27
Notice that Jesus didn’t touch this woman; she touched Jesus. Those with an aggressive type of faith make a demand on the Lord instead of just waiting for Him to do something for them. This is similar to the disciples in Matthew 14 when Jesus came to them walking on the water but made as though He would have passed by them (Mark 6:48). If they hadn’t cried out to Him, He would have walked right on by.
Many people don’t receive their miracles because they are too passive.
Notice also that this woman touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. The multitude was thronging Him. There is no way this woman could have just stooped over and touched the hem of His garment in a crowd like this. This implies she was on her hands and knees, pressing through the crowd. She was determined. That’s why she got healed.

Mark 5:28

Note on Mark 5:28
The Greek word that was translated as “whole” here is “SOZO.” This is the New Testament’s all-inclusive word for what Jesus accomplished. It is commonly used to denote forgiveness of sins, but as can be clearly seen in this passage, it also refers to the health of our bodies. Salvation includes forgiveness of sins but also encompasses healing, deliverance, and prosperity.
God’s power is governed by law (see my notes at Mark 5:30 and Luke 8:46). One of the laws of God is “you will have what you say” (Proverbs 18:20-21, Mark 11:23, and Romans 10:10). This woman plugged into God’s power by the words she said. Our tongues will work for us or against us. Many people are hung by their own tongues.
Matthew 9:21 says this woman “said within herself,” implying she didn’t speak this out loud, but this verse in Mark says that she spoke this. There is no contradiction. She did both.

Mark 5:29

Note on Mark 5:29
This healing took place instantly, and the woman could feel that it had happened.

Mark 5:30

Note on Mark 5:30
We can feel when virtue flows out of us, just as Jesus did.
Can it be that Jesus literally didn’t know who touched Him? Many people would just dismiss this as a rhetorical question, but I believe Jesus literally didn’t know who touched Him. This isn’t a claim against His divinity. Rather, this is simply illustrating that Jesus was a God-man. In His spirit, He was totally God and knew all things. But in His physical body, He was a man who had to grow in wisdom and knowledge (Luke 2:52). In Jesus’ physical mind, He didn’t know who touched Him. When He asked this question and the woman didn’t come forward immediately, He drew on the perfect knowledge in His spirit, got a word of knowledge, and singled this woman out. But His question was genuine.
This reveals another great truth. Our Lord didn’t size this woman up and evaluate whether or not she was holy or sincere enough to get healed. He didn’t even know she was coming. Healing doesn’t work by the feelings of the Lord toward us. If it did, then we would be healed, because He loves us. There are laws that govern the release of God’s healing power. This woman put those laws into effect and was healed. Just as electricity flows by laws, not the feelings of the electric company, so healing is governed by law.
We can’t call the power company and ask them to turn on our lights. They generate the power and make sure it is delivered to our residences, but it’s up to us to flip the switch. Likewise, the Lord has healed all our diseases and put that power on the inside of us, but we have to release it by our faith. Begging God to do what He has told us to do will not work any more than begging the electric company to turn on our lights will work.
See my note at Luke 8:46.

Mark 5:31

Note on Mark 5:31
The disciples were thinking physically, or carnally. They were only looking at all the people who physically touched Jesus, but Jesus was speaking of someone who touched Him by faith. Many people may go through the motions of seeking Jesus, but there is a life-saving difference when a person touches Jesus in faith. See my note at Luke 8:45.

Mark 5:32

Note on Mark 5:32
Notice that Jesus “looked round about” to see who had done this. He didn’t just instantly know. He had to look and perceive. As mentioned in my note at Mark 5:30, I believe this literally means Jesus didn’t know in advance that this woman was coming and who touched Him. He had that ability to know but hadn’t exercised it in advance.

Mark 5:33

Note on Mark 5:33
According to the Old Testament law, this woman was not supposed to be in public because she had this issue of blood (Leviticus 15). If she was to see someone, she was supposed to warn them of her uncleanness because if they touched her, they would become unclean also. Therefore, she had reason to fear what Jesus or some of these people might do to her if they found out her condition.
Leviticus 15:28-30 commanded an offering after a woman was cleansed of an issue of blood. Jesus didn’t mention that.
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 4 at Mark 5:33: According to the Levitical law, not only the person having an issue of blood was unclean, but also those who touched the unclean person became unclean themselves (Leviticus 15:19-33). Those who were unclean were responsible for warning others of their uncleanness or at least avoiding public exposure, and they could expect very harsh treatment if detected. This could be the reason for this woman fearing and trembling as she confessed what had happened to her. Luke said she confessed this to Jesus before all the people (Luke 8:47).
It is also possible that this was a godly fear or awe that this woman experienced as she realized the magnitude of what had happened to her. Nearly everyone in Scripture who experienced the presence of God in a strong way or had the power of God manifested to them reacted with this awe (Exodus 3:6, 19:16, 20:18-20; Judges 6:22-23, 13:22; Psalms 89:7; Daniel 10:7, 11-12; Matthew 17:6; Luke 8:25, 35; Acts 9:6; and Revelation 1:17).

Mark 5:34

Note on Mark 5:34
Here is that great Greek word for salvation, “SOZO,” being applied to physical healing again. This proves Jesus purchased healing for us in His atonement.
Notice that it was this woman’s faith that made her whole. Jesus didn’t just do this for her. She had a strong, active faith that reached out and took what was available. This is the type of faith all of us should strive for (Jude 3).

Mark 5:35

Note on Mark 5:35
Most people believe death puts people beyond God’s ability to intervene. But Jesus proved that He was able to raise people from the dead just as easily as He healed their bodies.
Jairus could have reacted two ways to this situation with the woman who had the issue of blood. He knew time was critical, and he could have been upset with this woman for the delay that possibly cost his daughter her life. But he could also have taken courage and had his faith bolstered seeing such a miraculous healing take place before his eyes. We always have a choice as to how we process what happens in our lives. We can choose to be bitter or better.

Mark 5:36

Note on Mark 5:36
Why didn’t Jesus just raise Jairus’ daughter from the dead? Then the problem would have been solved. Why did He tell Jairus to believe? Why did He say “only believe”? It’s because Jairus’ faith was an important part of this miracle; people can believe and disbelieve at the same time (see my note at Luke 8:50).
Most people don’t have this concept. They think if they have faith, then there won’t be any unbelief. And if they have any unbelief, then there isn’t any faith. That’s not what God’s Word teaches. People can have faith and unbelief at the same time.
Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 17:20 that the reason they couldn’t cast the demon out of the boy was because of their unbelief. He didn’t say it was because of their little faith (as the New International Version renders that verse). Otherwise, His illustration that He goes on to give in that verse wouldn’t make sense. He said if their faith was as small as a mustard seed, they could cast a mountain into the sea with just their words.
A small amount of faith is sufficient to accomplish any miracle if it’s not negated, cancelled, or diluted by unbelief. Instead of just trying to build faith, we need to limit the amount of unbelief in our lives. See my notes at Matthew 17:20-21.
Jesus countered Jairus’ fear and told him to only believe.

Mark 5:37

Note on Mark 5:37
It was common when people were raised from the dead for the person who raised them from the dead to sperate themselves from unbelief. Elijah did this (1 Kings 17:19-22). Elisha did this (2 Kings 4:33). Peter did this (Acts 9:40). Jesus was hindered in performing mighty works in His hometown because of the people’s unbelief (Mark 6:5-6). If He had allowed the crowd or even some of the family friends into the room, they could have hindered this miracle. See my note at Luke 8:51.

Mark 5:38

Note on Mark 5:38
The Jews thought it was a sign of great love and respect to bewail the death of a loved one. For this reason, they actually hired professional mourners who would come to their house and cry over the death of the loved one.

Mark 5:39

Note on Mark 5:39
No doubt, this girl was dead as we know it, not just asleep. But from God’s perspective, death is similar to sleep. It’s not final. We will awaken someday. We could awaken from death at the final resurrection, or it could be in just a few moments, as in this case where Jesus awoke her early. But for those who operate in God’s faith, raising a person from the dead is as easy as awakening someone from sleep.

Mark 5:40

Note on Mark 5:40
Here were God’s own creations, ridiculing Him for His stance of faith. The Lord would have been righteous to destroy them all, just as Elisha did when he was mocked (2 Kings 2:23-24). But that’s not what He came to do. He came to save us, not judge us (Luke 9:55-56).
He put all this unbelief outside because it could have hindered the performance of this miracle. See my notes at Mark 6:5-6.

Mark 5:41

Note on Mark 5:41
There was no rebuking of the devil or death. He simply commanded her to arise and she did. What a display of power!
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 1 at Mark 5:41: This was an Aramaic phrase that means “maiden, I say unto thee, arise” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary). Aramaic words were used elsewhere in Scripture (Matthew 27:46; Mark 7:34, and 15:34) although reasons for their use are not given. It becomes evident from a historical perspective, however, that Aramaic was the language most commonly spoken by Jesus and large numbers of Jews.
The Aramaic language uses the same alphabet as the Jewish language but differs somewhat in pronunciation and grammar. The Assyrian language, which was spoken in Babylon, was also closely related. When the Jews returned from the Babylonian captivity, Aramaic was the language adopted by them to use in everyday affairs and business. Hebrew Scriptures were also translated into Aramaic.
Just as in modern English literature when foreign words or expressions are inserted when the author feels an English word does not adequately express what he is trying to communicate, Matthew and Mark may have felt their Aramaic words more correctly rendered their meaning than any Greek word.

Mark 5:42

Note on Mark 5:42
This was a total miracle. For the girl to come back to life was miraculous. We know she was dead for some period of time, so to come back with no brain damage was even more miraculous. Then to be able to walk and eat was even more miraculous. Whatever the sickness was that killed her, she came back without it.

Mark 5:43

Note on Mark 5:43
If people’s unbelief could have prevented this miracle, then people’s unbelief could have stolen it away. I believe the Lord told Jairus and his wife not to tell people of this miracle so that they wouldn’t speak out their unbelief and cause their daughter to relapse.
This girl’s resurrection was totally miraculous, but notice that she now needed natural food. There is always a blending of the natural and supernatural in walking with the Lord. She was raised supernaturally but sustained naturally.

Mark 5::1 -25 - Whom do you serve?

Whom do you serve?

Mark 5

Mark 5:1

Note on Mark 5:1
This deliverance is recorded by Matthew (Matthew 8:28), Mark (Mark 5:1-20), and Luke (Luke 8:27). Matthew 8:28 says there were two demoniacs (see my note at Mark 5:2).
The Gadarenes inhabited the land that was given to the tribe of Gad on the east of the river Jordan (Numbers 32:5 and 29-33).
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 2 at Mark 5:1: The city of Gadara was one of ten cities of the Decapolis (see note 1 at Matthew 4:25). The historian Josephus described it as a strong and wealthy city inhabited mostly by Greeks. Its location was about five and one-half miles southeast of the Sea of Galilee at an elevation that allowed a full view of the sea.
Gadara was the capital of a district called Gadaritis located east of the Jordan River and extending north to the southeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Because of the size and importance of this city, those who dwelt on the east side of the Sea of Galilee were called Gadarenes.
Matthew referred to “the country of the Gergesenes” (Matthew 8:28). Origen, an early Christian historian, was told that an old town named Gergesa existed on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, near a place where the land sloped steeply into the lake. The ruins of a town named Kursi have existed at this site in modern times.
The Revised Version uses the name “Gerasenes” in Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26, and 37. This name was probably derived from “Gerasa,” another city in the area. The ruins of Kursi are opposite Magdala and five miles southeast of where the Jordan River enters the Sea of Galilee. Just a short distance south of these ruins is the only place on the eastern coast where steep hills come close enough to the water to meet the conditions of Matthew 8:32, Mark 5:13, and Luke 8:33.

Mark 5:2

Note on Mark 5:2
Why was this man demon possessed? 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because  your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Satan cannot just devour everyone. What had happened to cause this man to be in such a state? Whatever it was, it didn’t take Jesus long to deal with it and get the demons out. See my note at Isaiah 65:4.
Certainly, there are reasons that things happen, but the approach that some take, where it takes months or years to get to the root of the problem, is not the way Jesus ministered. This case of demon possession was worse than the ones we deal with. Therefore, if this man’s deliverance came in just minutes, we should expect the same.
Matthew’s account of this story records two men who were demon-possessed. Some have tried to use this difference to discredit the Gospels as a whole. But if there were two men, then there was one man. Mark and Luke don’t state that there was only one man. They just focus on one. That is their prerogative and does not contradict Matthew’s account. It’s possible that this one man’s deliverance was so notable, it overshadowed the other man’s deliverance.

Mark 5:3

Note on Mark 5:3
These demons gave this man superhuman strength. See my note at Luke 8:29.
Luke said this man wore no clothes (Luke 8:27).

Mark 5:4

Note on Mark 5:4
If this man was strong enough to break chains, it must have been quite an effort to put those chains on him. And this had happened often. The people had tried to deal with this problem many times before. But all they could do was bind him unsuccessfully. Jesus didn’t bind him. He loosed him. People’s solutions are ways to bind, while God comes to set the captives free (Luke 4:18-19).

Mark 5:5

Note on Mark 5:5
These demons caused this man to cry day and night and cut himself. Satan only steals, kills, and destroys (John 10:10). The devil lies to people that its bondage to serve the Lord, but just the opposite is true.

Mark 5:6

Note on Mark 5:6
Demons don’t worship Jesus. This man, as demon possessed as he was, still had enough control to fall at Jesus’ feet and worship Him. He had gone so far that he couldn’t get free on his own, but he could worship Jesus. There is no demon- possessed person who can’t exert his will enough to make some step toward the Lord for deliverance. Failure to solicit a faith step towards the Lord will keep a demon-possessed person from getting delivered.
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 3 at Mark 5:6: The word “worshipped” is taken from the Greek word “PROSKUNEO,” and it means to “prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore)” (Strong’s Concordance). The fact that this tormented man ran to Jesus and not away from Him indicates that even “demon-possessed” people have a free will and Satan cannot control people without their consent. Also illustrated in this verse is Philippians 2:10-11 (“every knee should bow...And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord”) and James 2:19 (“the devils also believe, and tremble,” see note 3 at Mark 1:32).

Mark 5:7

Note on Mark 5:7
This man made a step towards God by falling down and worshiping Jesus. But he was so demon possessed that he couldn’t speak independently of the demons that possessed him.

Mark 5:8

Note on Mark 5:8
In Luke’s account of this same incident (Luke 8:29), it says, “For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.” So in Mark 5:7, these demons were saying these things in response to Jesus’ command. Therefore, we can see that the demons didn’t leave immediately. They argued with Jesus for a while, seeking some concession.

Mark 5:9

Note on Mark 5:9
A Roman legion consisted of 6,000 troops. Therefore, it is supposed that this man had somewhere around 6,000 demons.
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 4 at Mark 5:9: Mark and Luke recorded Jesus asking the demon his name, but Matthew did not. In 1 John 4:1-3, we are told to try (test, discern, examine) the spirits to see if they are of God. Discerning of spirits is one of the manifestations of the Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:10.
According to Mark’s and Luke’s accounts of this passage, Jesus’ command of “come out of the man” was not met with a quick response, as in other cases of deliverance (Mark 1:25-26; Luke 4:33-35, 9:42, and 13:11-13). It appears that finding the “spokesman” for the demons (who identified himself as “Legion”) was important in this case. Once the “strong man” (Matthew 12:29) of the group was exposed by identifying himself at Jesus’ command, the other demons, whose power would have been less than their leader, followed him as he left the man’s body.
Whether Jesus actually did not discern the legion of demons or if He did but chose to use this incident as a means to teach His disciples, the demons still knew Him and His authority; the demoniac was delivered. Jesus gave that same authority to His disciples (Matthew 10:1, 8; and Luke 10:1-20).

Mark 5:10

Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 5 at Mark 5:10: Scripture implies that once evil spirits have found an individual, a family, or an area in which to dwell, they are unwilling to leave. Examples are iniquities of fathers being passed on to the third and fourth generations (Exodus 34:7 and Deuteronomy 5:9), the spirit gone out of a man seeking to return (Matthew 12:43-45 and Luke 11:24-26), and the fact that demonic “princes” or “kings” of an area exercised spiritual authority over that area (Ezekiel 28:2-19, 38:2-3, 39:1; Daniel 10:12-13, 20; Ephesians 1:21, 6:12; Colossians 1:16, and 2:15). Luke said this man had the devils a “long time,” and Mark said they implored Jesus not to send them “out of the country.” They may have had hopes that after Jesus had gone, they could once again enter the demoniac. Matthew and Luke warned of this possibility (Matthew 12:43-45 and Luke 11:24-26), and the demons may have reasoned that if Jesus permitted them to enter the swine, they would not have to leave the area. People delivered of demons must fill themselves with the presence and power of God to stay free (see note 4 at Matthew 12:44).

Mark 5:11

Note on Mark 5:11
Swine were unclean to the Jews (Leviticus 11:7-8 and Deuteronomy 14:8). So if these swine belonged to Jews, they were being raised in violation of God’s commands.

Mark 5:12

Note on Mark 5:12
This illustrates how demons need a physical body to exert any influence. They are spirits, and only people or even animals with physical bodies have authority to operate on this earth. Therefore, Satan or demons can’t do anything to us without our consent and cooperation. Even a pig has more authority than a demon.

Mark 5:13

Note on Mark 5:13
Pigs are smarter than demon-possessed people. People will often brag about their demons; pigs are so ashamed they kill themselves.
Life For Today Study Bible Notes
Note 6 at Mark 5:13: As incredible as it may seem, this demoniac may have been possessed with as many as 2,000 demons based on the fact that 2,000 swine apparently became insane when the demons entered the herd. This shows that the demonic spirits are either very small or, because they do not have physical bodies, are able to occupy the same physical space simultaneously with other spirits. This verse also shows that the same demons that caused insanity in the demoniac caused insanity and self-destruction in the swine. (Swine kill themselves when they become demon-possessed. Many people brag about their demon possession.)
The financial loss on these 2,000 swine must also have been very substantial. If each were worth one day’s wages ($30.00 modern purchasing equivalent), the loss would be at least $60,000. The loss at today’s prices could exceed $150,000.

Mark 5:14

Note on Mark 5:14
It took a period of time for these messengers to run into all these areas and tell the people what had happened. When they arrived where Jesus and the recently-delivered man were, it was at least an hour or two after the fact. During this time, Jesus’ disciples clothed the man, and it’s reasonable to believe that Jesus was giving him instructions on how to stay free.

Mark 5:15

Note on Mark 5:15
This was an instant change in this man’s actions and mental state. It was not a renewing of his mind. Some people experience massive changes instantly because they call out to the Lord and get deliverance. When the devil leaves, they are instantly changed. But other people are dealing with the flesh and an unrenewed mind. In those cases, change comes progressively as they renew the way they think and believe.

Mark 5:16

Note on Mark 5:16
Notice that Jesus and His disciples didn’t publicize this miracle. Others did that for them. The really great miracles of God stir this kind of response. Lord, help me to release Your power to the degree that even unbelievers talk about it.

Mark 5:17

Note on Mark 5:17
Jesus had done a wonderful thing, and yet they wanted him to leave. This is amazing! But it is often the case that a real manifestation of God’s power causes fear in those who observe it. It brings to light their own weaknesses and unbelief and disturbs their paradigm. Rather than change, they want just to escape back to their old way of doing things, even though it isn’t getting the same miraculous results.

Mark 5:18

Note on Mark 5:18
This is amazing! Jesus taught that when people are cleansed of demons, the demons will return seeking to resume their place, and if they aren’t prepared, those people will become demon possessed seven times worse than they were (Matthew 12:45). This would lead to the thinking that it’s irresponsible to minister deliverance without taking the newly-delivered person under your wing for discipleship. But that’s not what Jesus did.
Anyone who has truly been set free wants to be with Jesus.

Mark 5:19

Note on Mark 5:19
This is what the Lord wants all of us to do. Notice that the focus of his testimony was not to be about how he had been delivered of demons, but it was all about God’s great love for him. Our testimonies should always draw people’s attention to the goodness and love of God.

Mark 5:20

Note on Mark 5:20
What a testimony this must have been! These people had seen this man totally demon possessed, and now he is completely normal and proclaiming Jesus as the one who set him free.

Mark 5:21

Note on Mark 5:21
Jesus had been rejected by the Gadarenes, but here were the people on the other side of the sea to receive Him in large numbers and great enthusiasm. There is a lesson here for us. If one group of people rejects us, move on (Matthew 10:23). There are others who will receive our witness (Luke 9:52-56).

Mark 5:22

Note on Mark 5:22
This instance with Jairus was also recorded in Matthew 9:18-19 and 23-26 and in Luke 8:41-42 and 49-56.
Jairus couldn’t get his miracle in the synagogue, of which he was one of the leaders. He had to go outside the church to where the Person was with the miracle-working power. Many people miss their miracles because they think God can only work in a church.

Mark 5:23

Note on Mark 5:23
This synagogue ruler’s faith wasn’t as strong as the Roman centurion’s (Matthew 8:8-12). The centurion didn’t need Jesus to personally come and heal his servant. All he needed was Jesus to speak the word of deliverance. Yet, Jesus didn’t rebuke Jairus for having a weaker faith than the centurion. He met him where his faith was.

Mark 5:24

Note on Mark 5:24
Robertson’s New Testament Word Pictures says, “The only example of (here and in verse 31) this compound verb in the N.T., common in old Greek. Were pressing Jesus so that he could hardly move because of the jam, or even to breathe.”

Mark 5:25

Note on Mark 5:25
This woman touching the hem of Jesus’ garment is also recorded in Matthew 9:20-22 and Luke 8:43-48. Luke 6:19 also implies this happened on other occasions too.
It is very possible that Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, knew this woman. She would have been one of his parishioners. Jairus was in a tremendous hurry. His daughter was at the point of death, and as related later in this chapter, she did die before Jesus got to his house. I’m sure Jairus was upset with this delay, but he had the wisdom not to say anything.
