Dear Reader,
They're kids who haven't had their first day of high school yet -- and they're already developing the bones of people in their 60s and 70s.
And it's important to make sure a child you love isn't next.
I'm talking about the millions of kids who are taking ADHD meds like Ritalin right now. For year's I've been warning you how these drugs can damage everything from children's hearts to their brains.
But now federal researchers have discovered a frightening new risk -- one that could set up countless kids for a lifetime of bone problems before they're even out of their teens.

Breaking bad
------------------------------
Last year I told you that Dr. Keith Conners at Duke University -- the same doctor who did everything he could to put ADHD on the map -- now calls the number of kids taking meds "preposterous."
And he's sure got that right.
At last count, there were more than 3.5 million kids taking drugs like Ritalin, Strattera, and Vyvanse every single day.
That's about equal to the entire population of Los Angeles -- and it's only getting worse.
And now, to all the horrific drug side effects I've told you about over the years, ranging from heart disease to depression, seizures and death, we can add the risk of weak and brittle bones.
A new study from the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research looked at over 5,000 children and found proof that ADHD drugs are actually thinning kids' bones. I'm talking about the femur (the longest, strongest bone in the human body), neck and even spine.
And get this -- 25 percent of these kids had such poor bone density that they qualified for a diagnosis of osteopenia.
That's a bone condition we usually hear about in post-menopausal women!
Of course, it would be bad enough if this was some sort of big surprise. But we've known since the get-go that these meds can affect a child's growth. And Big Pharma and friends have been trying to dismiss this finding for just as long.
Studies done back in the early 70s found that kids taking even "moderate" doses of ADHD drugs weighed less and were shorter than those not taking them. But not to worry we were told, if kids stopped the drugs, they started growing at a normal pace again!
What a crock! Lots of kids are on these meds through high school and beyond, and most all bone growth is completed by the time we reach the age of 20.
So when are these kids supposed to go through their growth spurts? In their 30s?
Worse still, ADHD meds could be setting these children up for a crippling life of misery and bone problems. One that will no doubt come with a portfolio of additional risky drugs to try and keep their bones together.
Of course, this is the type of problem you'd like our government and Big Pharma to spot long before millions of kids are handed prescriptions.
But as I've told you, nobody had any idea of what the long-term risks of these meds would be. The average length of time for studies presented to the FDA was around four weeks, and more than half of the early trials were done with less than 100 subjects!
Dr. Jessica Rivera, an orthopedic surgeon and lead researcher on this new study, said that doctors need to be cautioned about bone risks for kids. She said that they should think about doing nutritional counseling or other "preventive" measures.
And that's good advice. Because while it can be frustrating to see a child you love struggle with ADHD symptoms -- or have a hard time in school -- research has shown that simple dietary changes (like loading up on protein) can make a big difference.
And that makes a lot more sense than pumping our kids full of meds that could cause serious -- and permanent -- bone damage down the road.
To Your Good Health,
Jenny Thompson
