Every once in a while - Hebrews Chap 1

Here we look at what has been said by the Eternal God Almighty and His instruction to help direct our existence - directly by the Holy Spirit in Hebrews!

  ------------------------------------------------

Hebrews 1:1 (KJV)
1  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

 Hebrews 1:1
Note on Hebrews 1:1
The Greek word from which “sundry times” was translated is POLUMEROS. According to Strong’s, it means “in many portions, i.e. variously as to time and agency (piecemeal).” In other words, the way God communicated with people under the Old Covenant was incomplete and sporadic. But in contrast, the Father has now revealed Himself perfectly through His Son, Jesus, in the New Covenant.
The revelation of the Father through Jesus is far more superior than the Old Covenant revelation of God. The Old Covenant wasn’t inaccurate.
It was incomplete. We now have a better revelation - in the N.T..

Hebrews 1:2-3 (KJV)
2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Hebrews 1:2

Note on Hebrews 1:2
Jesus perfectly represented His Father to us. God the Father created the worlds through Jesus. Colossians 1:16-17 says, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him do all things consist.”
John 1:3 says, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
Jesus is the heir to all that God has and is, and we are joint heirs with Him (Romans 8:17).

Hebrews 1:3

Note on Hebrews 1:3
Isaiah 42:8 says the Lord will not share His glory with another. Therefore, Jesus is the Lord or else He wouldn’t be the brightness of God’s glory. What a great testament to the deity of Jesus.

The Greek word “CHARAKTER,” from which “express image” was translated, was defined by Strong’s Concordance as “a graver (the tool or the person), i.e. (by implication) engraving ((”character“), the figure stamped, i.e. an exact copy or (figuratively) representation).”
Jesus was exactly like His Father. He was an exact copy. He perfectly represented God to us. If we look at Jesus, we are looking at the Father (John 14:9).
Colossians 1:17 says that “by him all things consist.” Jesus holds creation together.
If He were to break His Word (the Word that created the universe, John 1:3), then the universe would fly apart. Since creation is still intact, we can be assured that He has never failed to keep His Word. God’s Word is the binding power that holds all creation together.
So, when we speak God’s Word in faith, that power is released.
After Jesus purged us of or from our sin, He sat down on the right hand of the Father.
The significance of this is that He isn’t still having to cleanse us. He’s seated.
It’s finished. Jesus doesn’t have to continually purge us from sin every time we sin.
It was done once for all time (Hebrews 10:10-14).
We were forgiven of all sin: past-, present-, and even future-tense sin (Hebrews 9:12 and 25-28).

Hebrews 1:4-6 (KJV)
4  Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
5  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
6  And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Note on Hebrews 1:4
The purpose of the book of Hebrews is to establish that Jesus supersedes all other beings and revelations of God.
It is to prove that we have a better covenant than the Old Covenant and move the readers from the old to the new. This chapter shows the superiority of Jesus over any angel.
Jesus is greater than any angel; He created the angels (Colossians 1:16-17 and John 1:3).
He is God’s Son and, therefore, God’s heir (Hebrews 1:2).
He has a greater power and authority than the angels by inheritance.

Hebrews 1:5

Note on Hebrews 1:5
This is a quotation from Psalms 2:7–“...Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”
This was also quoted in Acts 13:33 and applied in a way that reveals that the day in which Jesus was begotten was the day of His resurrection from the dead.
The latter part of this verse quotes 2 Samuel 7:14, 1 Chronicles 17:13, and 1 Chronicles 22:10. All of these verses are promises to the seed of David that God will be their Father and he will be God’s Son. From Galatians 3:16, we see that the seed of David is Christ.
The point the writer of Hebrews is making is that the O.T. statements about Jesus elevate Him to a position higher than any angel.
Therefore, the word of Jesus is greater than the word of any angel.

Hebrews 1:6

Note on Hebrews 1:6
God commanded the angels to worship Jesus at His birth (Luke 2:13).
This proves that Jesus is superior to the angels. They would not worship an equal but a greater.
** The Jehovah’s Witness organization preaches that Jesus was an angel, specifically the O.T. Michael, the archangel. Therefore, they don’t believe Jesus was God but an angelic created being. This is heresy, which denies the deity of Jesus.
This is totally against what these scriptures are presenting here.

Hebrews 1:7-9 (KJV)
7  And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
8  But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
9  Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Hebrews 1:7

Note on Hebrews 1:7
This verse quotes Psalms 104:4. It is saying Jesus created the angels; therefore, the Creator has to be superior to His creation.

Hebrews 1:8

Note on Hebrews 1:8
This is quoting Psalms 45:6, which says, “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.”
God the Father is referring to Jesus as God.
This is conclusive proof of the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:9

Note on Hebrews 1:9
The author of Hebrews continued his quote from Psalms 45. In Hebrews 1:8, which is a quote from Psalms 45:6, God the Father called Jesus “God.”
Then in Psalms 45:7, the writer spoke of the God of the one whom God just called God (i.e., Jesus).
All of this is to say that the Father and Jesus are both referred to as God.
In light of the scripture from Deuteronomy 6:4 - “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD,” there can be no doubt that Jesus and the Father are both God, yet they are not two Gods but one God. Of course, the Holy Spirit is part of this Godhead also (see my note at Acts 5:4).
The term Christianity has come up with to try to define this is “the Trinity.”

Notice also that the Lord anointed Jesus with the oil of gladness above all His fellows.
That means Jesus was the happiest man on the earth. He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3), but He was also happier than anyone else.
** Religion has obstructed this view of Jesus and, therefore, has produced a lot of sad Christians.
Notice that hating iniquity is a godly thing. There are people who love to think on how the Lord has made believers the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21) but they don’t hate iniquity.
That’s totally ungodly because it’s not like Jesus.

 Hebrews 1:10-12 (KJV)
10  And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
11  They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
12  And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

Hebrews 1:10

Note on Hebrews 1:10
In Hebrews 1:2, the writer said God the Father created all things by Jesus.
So, it was Jesus, who laid the foundation of the earth, and the works of the heavens are the works of Jesus’ hands.
Jesus was not just a mere man;  He is far more than any human.
He was God manifest in the flesh, and now He is God in a glorified body.

Hebrews 1:11

Note on Hebrews 1:11
This verse is continuing to speak of Jesus. Jesus will outlast His creation.
If He will outlast the heavens, then certainly, He is more than a man or angel.
He is God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16).  Amen!

Hebrews 1:12

Note on Hebrews 1:12
Jesus is the One who created the heavens and the earth, and He will be the One to destroy them. Therefore, He is superior to creation and all created beings, including any and all angels.

Hebrews 1:13-14 (KJV)
13  But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
14  Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Hebrews 1:13

Note on Hebrews 1:13
This is a quotation from Psalms 110:1, which says, “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” Here again is one Lord (God the Father) speaking to another Lord (Jesus) to sit at His (the Father’s) right hand.
The point is that Jesus was not just an angel. He is the Son of God, God in the flesh, and a part of the Godhead.

Hebrews 1:14

Note on Hebrews 1:14
All angels are commissioned by God to minister to those who SHALL BE heirs of salvation.
This means that the angels’ assignment to us doesn’t start just after we are saved.
They have been ministering to us even in our lost state because the Lord knows we SHALL BECOME followers of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:4).
Thank You, Jesus!
