Probiotics as a cure for candida infection

Yeast overgrowth, or candida infection, is a common problem affecting large numbers of people in modern society, due mainly to the overuse of antibiotics as well as high intakes of sugar and other proeucts that promote the growth of yeast.

The common symptoms of yeast infection, or candida albicans overgrowth, might include:
  • chronic fatigue
  • low immunity
  • food sensitivity
  • intestinal gas
  • poor digestion and other digestion-related problems
  • groin itch
  • anal / vaginal / scrotum itch.
In addition, children with autism, ADHD and other developmental disorders are often found to be infected with candida as well. 

This problem is made worse by the fact that yeast is extremely difficult to destroy. Conventional medical treatments for candida albicans typically involve the use of powerful drugs that produce strong side effects, and yet these treatments are often not very effective. 
 
On the other hand, more natural approaches to treating candida infection have proven to be effective. And instead of causing harmful side effects, these natural candida cures bring about other health benefits, including greater immunity to infectious diseases, improved digestion, higher energy levels, and so on.



Probiotics
Among the effective natural treatments for candida is the use of probiotics, or what is commonly called friendly bacteria or beneficial bacteria.

The strategy behind this natural candida cure is a simple one – flood the intestines with friendly, beneficial bacteria so that there won't be room for yeast and harmful bacteria to thrive.

There are many brands of probiotics available. These typically contain between 2 billion and 5 billion. It may seem like a lot. But the amount is actually far too little to create any significant impact.

The colon or large intestine of a typical adult has an estimated 100 trillion bacteria. That is 100,000,000,000,000 (one followed by 14 zeroes), or 100,000 billion!

So if you just take a few billion probiotics, it is not going to produce much results. Moreover, the friendly bacteia may no longer be active. Most brands guarantee the bacteria to be active only at the time of manufacture, not at the time you take them.

For effective treatments of yeast infection and other intestinal prolems, you need very high potency probiotics. 

One good brand of probiotics I know that can be effective against candida infection is Doctor's Formula.
The Doctor's Formula probiotics contain a mix of five types of beneficial bacteria:
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus salivarius
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus
  • Bifidobacterium infantis
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum
Doctor's Formula has an ultra high potency version that contains 100 billion CFU (colony forming units) of active probiotics per capsule. For candida infection and other digestion-related disorders, as well as to improve immunity against disease, this is recommended twice daily, preferably taken early in the morning and late at night, on a relatively empty stomach. 

For general health maintenance, a high potency probiotics with 20 billion CFU probiotics is recommended. 
 
Whatever brand of probiotics you buy, these are the sort of potency levels that you should be looking at. With low potency probiotics, you will not likely see much results. There is no harm in taking more as probiotics have no toxic effects. Any extra that the body does not need will simply be passed out in the stools. 

By the way, yogurt drinks as well as commercial yogurts, are NOT RECOMMENDED. 

Firstly, some commercial yogurts are pasteurised and the bacteria are dead. Secondly, even if the bacteria are alive, these products tend to contain significant amounts of sugar, a food that encourages the growth of yeast and therefore promotes the overgrowth of candida albicans. Thirdly, milk and dairy products also tend to worsen the symptoms of candida infection.

So apart from taking helpful products like probiotics, it is important for people suffering from candida infection to avoid certain foods that make the condition worse.
