Greatness requires humility - which is something most people lack.
Release of Hebrew Servants or slaves
…14 "You shall furnish him liberally from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as the LORD your God has blessed you.
15 "You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this today.
16 "It shall come about if he says to you, 'I will not go out from you,' because he loves you and your household, since he fares well with you;…
- But if your servant/slave says to you, "I do not want to leave you," because he loves you and your family and is well off with you,
The example of pure love for you God - or Master which is what a Bond Servant/Slave dedicates to his master because of their trusting bond!
Deut 15:15 read this key verse above -
It was a favorite of John Newton 1725 - 1807: it hung on his wall to remind him that it was The Lord God 's will to redeem us.
BTW: {if you have never read about Newton's life - do so then you can come to realize exactly what he meant by "Amazing Grace" -
(it is not about freeing slaves rather it is the saving work of God's Grace in Newton's and our lives.) because he had once lived a proud life until God got his attention! "That saved a wretch like me!" -}
** BTW: - did you know some people {probably liberals} have actually swapped "wretch" with "soul" - because it bothered them...
Most likely from such groups as the GAA community - because their actions are sinful and they do not want to be reminded !
*** What I say just stick with the truth and let everything else fall where it will - as you can not change someone's testimony - just because you do not agree with it! So when John Newton said he was a " Wretch " that is exactly what he meant! Stick with the truth! Lies and falsehoods will fail!
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be for ever mine.
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
(1779)
Notice that when John Newton left this world Robert E Lee was born thus carrying on the work of God...

The man who held this hymn "How Firm a Foundation " as special and his favorite we are discussing was a Southern gentleman!
Robert E. Lee 1807 - 1870
- How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said—
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? - “Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand. - “When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee thy trouble to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. - “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not harm thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. - “The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose,
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”
