What do you believe?

Hebrews Highlights: What Do You Believe?

Over the last forty years of teaching the Bible, I have learned some interesting things about how Christians determine what they believe. Unfortunately, one of the things I’ve learned is that many Christians never let the Bible get in the way of what they believe.

A recent Barna Survey reveals that for the first time, most Americans now depend upon their own logic, tradition, or experience to formulate beliefs. Few actually take the Word of God as the basis of their beliefs. The result is what Jesus spoke about in Mark 7:13:
“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition.”
Most Christians today aren’t aware that their “old-time religion” is polluted with many traditions that void the power of God’s Word. While there are plenty of “man-made” traditions that are harmful, it comes as a complete shock to most believers that there are traditions instituted by God that can make His Word of no effect.

The book of Hebrews was written specifically to contrast this and to show us how to approach God through a new and living way. I have spent decades meditating on this book, and especially Hebrews chapter 10:16-23, which I believe summarizes the whole book of Hebrews.
Those verses read,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering.”

Under the Old Covenant, a sacrifice had to be offered every time a sin was committed. Then, once a year on the day of atonement, a sacrifice was made by the high priest for everyone and everything just in case something was missed. However, all these sacrifices were just types and shadows of the ultimate sacrifice that was to come (Heb. 9:8-12 and 24-28).

The extreme legalist believes that if a Christian does not confess their sins they will go straight to hell. The less extreme believe that at the very least, the person will lose their fellowship with the Lord, and He will not answer their prayers. Both are wrong. If you have made Jesus your Lord, you’ve become a new creature, and sin is no longer an issue between you and God.
Hebrews 10:10 says,
“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Verse 14 goes on to say,
“For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”
Jesus paid the price for all sin, and there is nothing left to pay! There is no other way to say it: All is forgiven forever (Hebrews 10:10 and 14). Once you understand this, it gives you confidence to enter boldly into the holy of holies by the blood of Jesus (Heb. 10:19).

David didn’t have this type of relationship under the Old Covenant. Therefore, when he was repenting over his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah, he prayed,
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit” (Ps. 51:10-12).
However, for us as New Testament believers to pray this same prayer would be an insult to what Christ has done for us. God created a new heart in us when we were born again (2 Cor. 5:17) and sealed it with His Holy Spirit so it would never be polluted again (Eph. 1:13). He promised He would never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5), and His love, joy, and peace are now a permanent part of our born-again spirits (Gal. 5:22). Yet multitudes of New Testament Christians pray and sing the exact opposite of this.

Therefore, most Christians aren’t bold in their relationship with the Lord. They approach the Lord with fear of punishment and rejection. They fear they aren’t worthy and that they haven’t done enough to earn the right to be in His presence. They still believe their relationship with the Lord depends on their performance, and mixing the Old and the New Covenant makes the Word of God void in their lives.

Let’s read what Hebrews 10:22 says: “Having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.” Our consciences are the part of us that are defiled and keep us from having boldness to enter into the presence of God (Heb. 9:14). And why are our consciences defiled? Because of the Law, the Old Covenant. The Law is what gives us knowledge of sin and takes away our confidence.
Hebrews 10:1-2 says,
“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins” (emphasis mine).

The same word that was translated “boldness” in Hebrews 10:19 was translated “confidence” in Hebrews 10:35, which says,
“Cast not away your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.”
There are not many people who have strong confidence in their relationship with the Lord. Therefore, they have a hard time entering boldly into His presence.
What I am saying here is powerful. If we can understand the promises that have been made to us in these scriptures and quit trying to mix the Old with the New, it will change our lives. This is exactly what Jesus was saying in the parable about the new wine.

Matthew 9:17 reads,
“Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.”

The New Covenant is like new wine. It is meant to be placed in a new container. And you are that new container. In your spirit, when you were born again, you became a totally brand-new creation, created in righteousness and true holiness (Eph. 4:24). First John 4:17 says that you are identical to Jesus in your spirit: “As he is, so are we in this world.”

It’s your spirit that changed, not your soul or your body. John 4:24 says that God is a Spirit and that we must worship Him in spirit and in truth. So when a person says something like “I haven’t been praying enough, reading my Bible enough, or I just feel so worthless,” they aren’t worshiping Him in Spirit and in truth.
Instead, they have allowed an evil conscience, empowered by the Law of the Old Covenant, to condemn them. They are looking through the eyes of the flesh and soul, instead of the spirit. It’s time to stop mixing the Old with the New and to enter into the presence of God by a new a living way.

I have just taught a new series called Hebrews Highlights. It was a powerful teaching that visibly impacted the people at this seminar. I believe these truths will also help you get free and enter into the presence of God without condemnation or judgment. And maybe for the first time, you can begin to see yourself free from sin-consciousness.

The name of Jesus is not magic - seek Him

Seek First The Kingdom

July 6th

Luke 10:40 - 'But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?
bid her therefore that she help me.'

LUKE 10:40

There are only three instances in Scripture that give us information about Martha. From these accounts, we can see that Martha had a brother named Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, and a sister named Mary.
Martha had misplaced her priorities on this occasion and was corrected by Jesus. Later, at supper for Jesus in the home of Simon the leper, Martha was once again serving while Mary her sister was worshiping Jesus by anointing His feet with a costly perfume.

Martha was the first one to run and meet Jesus when He came to their home after the death of Lazarus. It was at this time that Martha said she knew Jesus could have prevented Lazarus from dying and that, even then, she knew He could raise him from the dead. She made a confession of faith in the deity of Jesus, every bit as strong as Peter's, which received a blessing from Jesus.

Martha was not wrong in serving Jesus and His disciples. Other women ministered to Jesus in this way without being corrected. The serving was a good thing, but Martha had put it in the wrong place. Her problem was priorities not what she was doing. It was a great honor to have Jesus in her home and to be able to hear His personal words to her household. Martha should have given this the same priority that Mary did.

Just like Martha, many people today are occupied with things that keep them from hearing the words of Jesus. It is easy to recognize and turn from things that obviously sin, but even good things that we are involved in must be prioritized so that nothing takes the place of seeking first the kingdom of God.

Stop and listen - often you will only get one chance to hear the truth! Learn to be observant and listen with an open heart and a clear conscience! Seeking first the Kingdom of God in your life!
Amen!

I stand for truth not making other people look good!

Stop and consider this sell-out plan going into action here!
I look at the truth - this map shows how unfair or disproportion the voting in the USA has become thru political redistricting of the nation! It has become a gerrymander Liberal controlled takeover!
Only a few of you will understand this dilemma; the rest are part of the problem {uninformed and/or ignorant} voters!
The original framers of the Constitution had the right idea, only actual bonified Citizens, Taxpayers and those who hold real jobs should be able to vote on national matters! Illegal immigrants should not be able to vote {This is a fact in almost all the world today - if their citizens can vote at all!} The USA is being stolen or sold out by the Socialist lib Demos - period!
Just look that map and take note of the significant disparity of a nation being turned into a Socialist Controlled state {Communists} - where a few in power run the country into the ground to make themselves look good!

Freedom is not free it requires sacrefices

From a reply on Naval service the 4th July 2019
The question was, what did you do, and would you change it?

My answer was an absolute NO! * it was a character and skills builder which helped shape the rest of my life!
It shows the " Can Do " Navy motto!

FTG 3 (Weapons Control Technician - both Gun and Missiles) keep as it introduced me to electronics - computers and radar, plus being able to work with sophisticated tracking systems. Then learning how to improvise and function as a team member, on a 24 x 7 schedule.

Served on 3 Destroyers and had 175,000 Nautical miles at sea - with over 100 times of getting underway. Spent (2) Christmas overseas, saw over 20 countries.
Had some dangerous times but during those events we were too busy care or really notice! It was the job we had responsibility for at sea: at sea rescues, evacuations from dangerous areas saving people from Riots - helped fight fires on other ships at sea, and assisted others overseas!

Thanks for your service whenever and where ever you did. I did not think much about the support of supply corps or support units, until much later when I worked on a floating offshore drilling rig - On Destroyers deployed we had fuel replenishment about every week, plus food and Ammo without which we would have soon been dead in the water!

God Bless your service whomever you were and whatever you did in the Fleet!

Forgotten Words How to Forgive Anyone!

Grieve the Holy Spirit??
*** Now that He (Christ) ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth (hell)?

So how does someone grieve the Holy Spirit?

** How does this effect you and your Eternity?

Read and Pray for divine discernment of the Holy Scriptures!

Ephesians 4:1-32 (KJV)

1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with long suffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fulfill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But ye have not so learned Christ;
21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Note 25 at Ephesians 4:30:
The Holy Spirit is a person who can be grieved .

(see note 7 at 1 Corinthians 6:11)
* Note 7 at 1 Corinthians 6:11:
The usual term used to describe the Spirit of God in the New Testament is the “Holy Spirit.” It is the clear and undeniable teaching of Scripture that the Holy Spirit is a divine personage. We are told that the Holy Spirit has intelligence and knowledge (1 Corinthians 2:10-13 and 12:8); speaks and guides (Acts 13:2, 16:6, 21:11; Romans 8:14; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, and 29); commands and appoints people (Acts 8:29; 13:2, 4; and 20:28); has feelings (Ephesians 4:30); and can be lied to (Acts 5:3), resisted (Acts 7:51), and blasphemed (Matthew 12:31).
Divine attributes such as omniscience (John 14:26, 16:12-13; and 1 Corinthians 2:10-11), omnipotence (Psalms 62:11 with Acts 5:3-4; Luke 1:35; Romans 1:4, and 8:11), omnipresence (Psalms 139:7-10), holiness (Luke 11:13 and Romans 1:4), eternalness (Hebrews 9:14), truth (1 John 5:6), wisdom (Isaiah 40:13), and life (Romans 8:2) are all ascribed to Him.

The name of the Holy Spirit is coupled in equality with the Father and the Son (Matthew 28:19 and 2 Corinthians 13:14), and it is identified with the Jehovah of the Old Testament scripture (Isaiah 6:8-10 with Acts 28:25-27, and Jeremiah 31:31-34 with Hebrews 10:15-17).
Symbols of the Holy Spirit used in Scripture are the dove (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, and John 1:32), fire (Acts 2:3), water (John 7:38-39), wind (John 3:8 and Acts 2:1-2), and oil (Luke 4:18, Acts 10:38, 2 Corinthians 1:21, and 1 John 2:27). These are material emblems that help represent and portray the Spirit.

In the life of the believer, the Holy Spirit regenerates (John 3:3-5 and Titus 3:5), indwells (1 Corinthians 6:19), seals (Ephesians 1:13-14 and 4:30), fills (Acts 2:4 and Ephesians 5:18), anoints (1 John 2:20 and 27), guides (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16, and 25), teaches (1 John 2:27), comforts (John 14:26), and empowers (Acts 4:31, Romans 8:2, and Galatians 5:16).
There is no such thing as victorious Christian living without a moment-by-moment, hour-by-hour, day-by-day dependence upon the Spirit of God (Romans 7:24-25 and 8:2). Not only is the Christian life hard to live, it is impossible to live without the power of God Himself (John 15:5).

(see note 4 at Acts 5:4)
* Note 4 at Acts 5:4: This is one of the clearest scriptural references about the Holy Ghost being God. In Acts 5:3, Peter said that Ananias had lied unto the Holy Ghost; then in this verse, he said Ananias had not lied unto men but unto God, thereby using the names God and Holy Ghost interchangeably

(see note 2 at Mark 1:10)
* Note 2 at Mark 1:10: All three persons of the Godhead are in manifestation at once: (1) the voice of the Father, (2) the Son in His physical body, and (3) the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove. This shows that the three Persons of the Trinity are distinct from each other, yet Scripture reveals that They are one (1 John 5:7). The Greek word for “one” in 1 John 5:7 is “HEIS,” and it signifies “a single (one), to the exclusion of others” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary), as well as united in purpose. This same Greek word is used in 1 Timothy 2:5, in which case it clearly means more than sameness of purpose.

The Trinity is first suggested in Genesis 1:26 by God saying, “Let us” (emphasis mine). One God spoke in the plural. Scripture has abundant references to the Father as God (ex. 1 Corinthians 8:6). Jesus is called God (Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1, 20:28; 1 Timothy 3:16; and Hebrews 1:8). The Holy Ghost is called God (Acts 5:3-4). Yet one of the great statements of the Old Testament from Deuteronomy 6:4 says that “the LORD our God is one LORD.” We do not have three Gods but one God clearly identifiable as three Persons. This is a great mystery that we do not have any adequate explanation for. Scriptures reveal the truth of the Trinity but make no attempt to explain it. We simply accept this revelation as it is, until we know all things, even as we are known (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Certainly, any actions or circumstances contrary to God’s perfect plan for us; grieve the Holy Spirit.
More specifically, all the things listed here (Ephesians 4:25-31) grieve the Spirit of God.

* Note 26 at Ephesians 4:31: Bitterness, wrath, and anger are related to each other and at times may become so interdependent that they are hard to distinguish from each other.
- Bitterness is the mildest of these three words. It could describe just resentment toward another person. Bitterness does not have to be expressed.
- Wrath is describing a violent anger, or rage, that is expressed.
- Anger, like bitterness, can be concealed; it does not have to be expressed.

* Note 27 at Ephesians 4:31: Strong’s Concordance defines “clamor” as “an outcry (...tumult or grief).”
It comes from a word that means “to scream” (Strong’s Concordance).
Wuest Word Studies from the Greek New Testament defines it as “the outcry of passion, the outward manifestation of anger in vociferation or brawling.”

Kindness is a characteristic of God’s kind of love
(see my note at 1 Corinthians 13:4). If we love others with God’s love, we will be kind.
The Amplified Bible defines “tenderhearted” as “compassionate, understanding, loving - hearted.”

* Note 28 at Ephesians 4:32:
The basis of our ability to forgive others is the fact that we have been forgiven ourselves. We can’t give what we don’t possess. If we aren’t walking in the forgiveness of God, we won’t minister it to others.
Since we have been forgiven, we can forgive others in the same way that God, for Christ’s sake, forgave us.
He forgave us before we repented or asked for forgiveness.
The offense against Him was infinitely greater than any offense we have ever suffered.
So, since He forgave us, we can forgive anyone.

Saved By Grace?

Many people desire and want the saving Grace of God in their life - yet will not accept and come to live by the Commandments! It is like they want the security and position of Grace  - but only under their own rules and regulations! Eternity does not work that way folks!

Saved By Grace

July 4th

Luke 10:28-29 - (NKJV)
28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

LUKE 10:28

Just as with this lawyer, pride causes many people to resist the truth of justification by faith in the grace of God. This lawyer loved himself and the public recognition his 'holy acts' gave him. He was not willing to love God first and his fellow man ahead of himself.
His was not a sincere question but rather an evasive question to shun responsibility. This man was seeking to be justified in the sight of God through his actions. He knew he had not loved everyone as he loved himself, so he is tried to interpret the scripture (Lev. 19:18) in a way that would conform to his actions. He wanted to define 'neighbor' as just his close friends whom he had treated well.
Self-justification always produces excuses, while repentance and faith toward God produces obedience.
The basis of our salvation is grace - that is, God's undeserved, unmerited favor toward us as expressed in providing redemption through Christ Jesus.
The means of God saving us is through faith. Through faith we accept God's free gift of salvation, which was provided by grace. So we are saved 'by grace ... through faith. 'Notice that we are not saved by grace alone. We are saved by grace through faith. Faith grants us admission to God's grace. Without faith, God's grace is wasted, and without grace, faith is powerless. Faith in God's grace has to be released to receive what God has provided through Christ.
Just as sodium and chloride are poisonous by themselves, so grace or faith used independently of each other are deadly. But when you mix sodium and chloride together in the proper way, you get salt, which you must have to live.
Likewise, putting faith in what God has already provided by Grace is the key to victorious Christian living. Nothing else is needed. It is only thru your faith in God's Grace or nothing!

There are no unique temptations

Freedom From Temptation

July 2nd

Luke 10:19 - 'Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.'

LUKE 10:19

Although these are examples of God's protection from harm caused by the physical creation, this scripture is also speaking of mastery over the spiritual realm of the enemy (i.e., Satan). This Scripture does not say that Satan cannot inflict any harm. The scriptures abound with examples, and warnings of the enemy's damage on the godly and the ungodly alike (2 Cor. 2:11, 2 Tim. 2:26, 1 Pet. 5:8-9).
However, he cannot harm us when we are walking in faith in Christ's redemptive work.

There are no unique temptations.

The devil likes to make us think there are. If he can convince us that no one understands, no one has ever had this problem before, then he can isolate us and take away our hope. But any temptation we face is just some variation of the same old thing. It may come in a different sized box, be wrapped in a different paper, and have a different bow, but the contents are the same. Understanding this diffuses much of the power of temptation.

Even though temptation is universal to mankind, we are not left on our own. God is faithful. Jesus was tempted in all points like as we are, and yet He overcame every time (Heb. 4:15).
Part of His ministry is to specifically aid us in overcoming temptation
 (Heb. 2:17-18).
Most of us have experienced times when we thought we couldn't resist another minute. Either we were wrong, or we were on the verge of a breakthrough.

The Lord promised that He would not allow us to be tempted above what we are able to bear. So, at those times when you can't stand another minute, just continue to stand and this promise will pull you through.

AI, what it does not know yet!

brain_illustration.jpg
Artificial intelligence can solve many problems, but it won’t replicate the human brain anytime soon. Photo by Flickr user DigitalRalph.

Today’s artificial intelligence is certainly formidable. It can beat world champions at intricate games like chess and Go, or dominate at Jeopardy!. It can interpret heaps of data for us, guide driverless cars, respond to spoken commands, and track down the answers to your internet search queries.
And as artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated, there will be fewer and fewer jobs that robots can’t take care of—or so Elon Musk recently speculated. He suggested that we might have to give our own brains a boost to stay competitive in an AI-saturated job market.
But if AI does steal your job, it won’t be because scientists have built a brain better than yours. At least, not across the board. Most of the advances in artificial intelligence have been focused on solving particular kinds of problems. This narrow artificial intelligence is great at specific tasks like recommending songs on Pandora or analyzing how safe your driving habits are. However, the kind of general artificial intelligence that would simulate a person is a long ways off.
“At the very beginning of AI there was a lot of discussion about more general approaches to AI, with aspirations to create systems…that would work on many different problems,” says John Laird, a computer scientist at the University of Michigan. “Over the last 50 years the evolution has been towards specialization.”
Still, researchers are honing AI’s skills in complex tasks like understanding language and adapting to changing conditions. “The really exciting thing is that computer algorithms are getting smarter in more general ways,” says David Hanson, founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics in Hong Kong, who builds incredibly lifelike robots.
And there have always been people interested in how these aspects of AI might fit together. They want to know: “How do you create systems that have the capabilities that we normally associate with humans?” Laird says.

So why don’t we have general AI yet?
There isn't a single, agreed-upon definition for general artificial intelligence. “Philosophers will argue whether General AI needs to have a real consciousness or whether a simulation of it suffices," Jonathan Matus, founder and CEO of Zendrive, which is based in San Francisco and analyzes driving data collected from smartphone sensors, said in an email.
But, in essence, “General intelligence is what people do,” says Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle, Washington. “We don’t have a computer that can function with the capabilities of a six year old, or even a three year old, and so we’re very far from general intelligence.”
Such an AI would be able to accumulate knowledge and use it to solve different kinds of problems. “I think the most powerful concept of general intelligence is that it’s adaptive,” Hanson says. “If you learn, for example, how to tie your shoes, you could apply it to other sorts of knots in other applications. If you have an intelligence that knows how to have a conversation with you, it can also know what it means to go to the store and buy a carton of milk.”
General AI would need to have background knowledge about the world as well as common sense, Laird says. “Pose it a new problem, it’s able to sort of work its way through it, and it also has a memory of what it’s been exposed to.”
Scientists have designed AI that can answer an array of questions with projects like IBM’s Watson, which defeated two former Jeopardy! champions in 2011. “It had to have a lot of general capabilities in order to do that,” Laird says.
Today, there are many different Watsons, each tweaked to perform services such as diagnosing medical problems, helping businesspeople run meetings, and making trailers for movies about super-smart AI. Still, “It’s not fully adaptive in the humanlike way, so it really doesn’t match human capabilities,” Hanson says.
We’re still figuring out the recipe for general intelligence. “One of the problems we have is actually defining what all these capabilities are and then asking, how can you integrate them together seamlessly to produce coherent behavior?” Laird says.
And for now, AI is facing something of a paradox. “Things that are so hard for people, like playing championship-level Go and poker have turned out to be relatively easy for the machines,” Etzioni says. “Yet at the same time, the things that are easiest for a person—like making sense of what they see in front of them, speaking in their mother tongue—the machines really struggle with.”
The strategies that help prepare an AI system to play chess or Go are less helpful in the real world, which does not operate within the strict rules of a game. “You’ve got Deep Blue that can play chess really well, you’ve got AlphaGo that can play Go, but you can’t walk up to either of them and say, ok we’re going to play tic-tac-toe,” Laird says. “There are these kinds of learning that are not you’re not able to do just with narrow AI.”

What about things like Siri and Alexa?
A huge challenge is designing AI that can figure out what we mean when we speak. “Understanding of natural language is what sometimes is called AI complete, meaning if you can really do that, you can probably solve artificial intelligence,” Etzioni says.
We’re making progress with virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa. “There’s a long way to go on those systems, but they’re starting to have to deal with more of that generality,” Laird says. Still, he says, “once you ask a question, and then you ask it another question, and another question, it’s not like you’re developing a shared understanding of what you’re talking about.”
In other words, they can't hold up their end of a conversation. “They don’t really understand what you say, the meaning of it,” Etzioni says. “There’s no dialogue, there’s really no background knowledge and as a result…the system’s misunderstanding of what we say is often downright comical.”
Extracting the full meaning of informal sentences is tremendously difficult for AI. Every word matters, as does word order and the context in which the sentence is spoken. “There are a lot of challenges in how to go from language to an internal representation of the problem that the system can then use to solve a problem,” Laird says.
To help AI handle natural language better, Etzioni and his colleagues are putting them through their paces with standardized tests like the SAT. “I really think of it as an IQ test for the machine,” Etzioni says. “And guess what? The machine doesn’t do very well.”
In his view, exam questions are a more revealing measure of machine intelligence than the Turing Test, which chatbots often “pass” by resorting to trickery.
“To engage in a sophisticated dialogue, to do complex question and answering, it’s not enough to just work with the rudiments of language,” Etzioni says. “It ties into your background knowledge, it ties into your ability to draw conclusions.”

Let’s say you’re taking a test and find yourself faced with the question: what happens if you move a plant into a dark room? You’ll need an understanding of language to decipher the question, scientific knowledge to inform you what photosynthesis is, and a bit of common sense—the ability to realize that if light is necessary for photosynthesis, a plant won’t thrive when placed in a shady area.
“It’s not enough to know what photosynthesis is very formally, you have to be able to apply that knowledge to the real world,” Etzioni says.

Will general AI think like us?
Researchers have gained a lot of ground with AI by using what we know about how the human brain. “Learning a lot about how humans work from psychology and neuroscience is a good way to help direct the research,” Laird says.
One promising approach to AI, called deep learning, is inspired by the architecture of neurons in the human brain. Its deep neural networks gather human amounts of data and sniff out patterns. This allows it to make predictions or distinctions, like whether someone uttered a “P” or a “B,” or if a picture features a cat or a dog.
“These are all things that the machines are exceptionally good at, and [they] probably have developed superhuman patter recognition abilities,” Etzioni says. “But that’s only a small part of what is general intelligence.”

Ultimately, how humans think is grounded in the feelings within our bodies, and influenced by things like our hormones and physical sensations. “It’s going to be a long time before we can create an effective simulation of all of that,” Hanson says.
We might one day build AI that is inspired by how humans think, but does not work the same way. After all, we didn’t need to make airplanes flap their wings. “Instead we built airplanes that fly, but they do that using very different technology,” Etzioni says.
Still, we might want to keep some especially humanoid features—like emotion. “People run the world, so having AI that understand and gets along with people can be very, very useful,” says Hanson, who is trying to design empathetic robots that care about people. He considers emotion to be an integral part of what goes into general intelligence.
Plus, the more humanoid a general AI is designed to be, the easier it will be to tell how well it works. “If we create an alien intelligence that’s really unlike humans, we don’t know exactly what hallmarks for general intelligence to look for,” Hanson says. “There’s a bigger concern for me which is that, if it’s alien are we going to trust it? Is it going to trust us? Are we going to have a good relationship with it?”

When will it get here?
So, how will we use general AI? We already have targeted AI to solve specific problems. But general AI could help us solve them better and faster, and tackle problems that are complex and call for many types of skills. “The systems that we have today are far less sophisticated than we could imagine,” Etzioni says. “If we truly had general AI we would be saving lives left and right.”
The Allen Institute has designed a search engine for scientists called Semantic Scholar. “The kind of search we do, even with the targeted AI we put in, is nowhere near what scientists need,” Etzioni says. “Imagine a scientist helper…that helps our scientists solve humanity’s thorniest problems, whether it’s climate change or cancer or superbugs.”
Or it could give strategic advice to governments, Matus says. “It could also be used to plan and execute super complex projects, like a mission to Mars, a political campaign, or a hostile takeover of a public company."

People could also benefit from general AI in their everyday lives. It could assist elderly or disabled people, improve customer service, or tutor us. “When it comes to a learning assistant, it could understand your learning weaknesses and find your strengths to help you step up and plan a program for improving your capabilities,” Hanson says. “I see it helping people realize their dreams.”

But all this is a long way off. “We’re so far away from…even six-year-old level of intelligence, let alone full general human intelligence, let alone super-intelligence,” Etzioni says. He surveyed other leaders in the field of AI, and found that most of them believed super-intelligent AI was 25 years or more away. “Most scientists agree that human-level intelligence is beyond the foreseeable horizon,” he says.
General artificial intelligence does raise a few concerns, although machines run amok probably won’t be one of them. “I’m not so worried about super-intelligence and Terminator scenarios, frankly I think those are quite farfetched,” Etzioni says. “But I’m definitely worried about the impact on jobs and unemployment, and this is already happening with the targeted systems.”
And like any tool, general artificial intelligence could be misused. “Such technologies have the potential for tremendous destabilizing effects in the hands of any government, research organization or company,” Matus says. This “simply means that we need to be clever in designing policy and systems that will keep stability and give humans alternative sources of income and occupation.” People are pondering solutions like universal basic income to cope with narrow AI's potential to displace workers.
Ultimately, researchers want to beef up artificial intelligence with more general skills so it can better serve humans. “We’re not going to see general AI initially to be anything like I, Robot. It’s going to be things like Siri and stuff like that, which will augment and help people,” Laird says. “My hope is that it’s really going be something that makes you a better person, as opposed to competes with you.”

Get it right THE FIRST TIME!

Most people will never read this - yet millions need this message! Then some will say we did not know - which is true! The real question is why don't they know - mainly ignorance and pride.

People tend to be followers and criticizes. What they should become example following the true principles of God in their lives. You can say what you want about me - just remember I do not make things true, and there is only one real source for the Absolute Truth! Check it out yourself!

If you have a firm foundation and read a variety of different things - you will find that everything is debatable - yet much of the debates are fostered by personal gain and self-centeredness! It is not about something being forced upon others - it is about what is the Truth and then actually having a complete understanding of the facts! - i.e. Learn about the true situations around you!

Too many so-called educated people today, seem to run off the rails attempting to correct history and real facts - just to make themselves look good!
I have studied Logic, Debate, Speech, Electronics, Geography, Chemistry, and many of the hard sciences plus Real unadulterated History! I seek the Absolute truth or the real reason for whatever - not a personal pipe dream!

Then was in the Navy, plus thirty odd years of heavy travels, stopping to take notice of exactly what is happening in the real world around us! What I see is so-called Liberalism - Socialist {Which tends to be about a few getting control of the masses with the purpose of making everything right, according to their propaganda!} thought is an expanded form of self-glory or just for feeling good stuff! More on look at me and how I saved you all!

Get in touch with the real world and not what you want stuff!
I did and hey the truth blows all the other crap out of the water!

You can not save anyone {except yourself} -

So, Get it right THE FIRST TIME!

All believers share in His victory!

Power In The Name Of Jesus

July 1st

Luke 10:17 - 'And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.'

LUKE 10:17

It was the power in the name of Jesus plus the disciples' faith in that power that made the demons subject unto them. This can clearly be seen in Acts 19:13-17 where certain Jews called on the name of Jesus in an effort to cast demons out of a man. They used the name of Jesus, but it didn't work because they had not put faith in that name.

These Jews were itinerants who used incantations to effect deliverance for people who were demon possessed. The first-century historian, Josephus, wrote of an exorcism that he witnessed in the presence of Vespasian and many of his soldiers. The exorcist supposedly followed a ritual passed down from King Solomon to effect the deliverance. There is no doubt that men throughout all history have tried to resist demonic spirits, but as this example proves, only Jesus and those who have received His life are successful.

Those who relegate demonic spirits to the realm of superstition do not believe in the entire Word of God. The Gospels alone contain over 90 references to the devil or devils (demons).

The Apostle Paul said when writing to these people in Ephesus, 'We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places' (Eph. 6:12). The devil and demons do exist, but all believers in Jesus share in His total victory over them.

The name of Jesus is not magic. It does not work like a charm. As Peter said, 'His name, through faith in his name' (Acts 3:16) is what brings results.
