Every once in a while as we stumble often unawares into situations; that both awaken our moral fiber and shock us into realizing the existence of the Eternity which follows... This happened to me the past week!
When one of our neighbors - Max Schouges; who had lived nearby for the past twenty some odd years was found was found in his home dead! Being found by Sheriff Deputies, after being called by his boss reported him missing from work for 2 days... Being only 50 years of age, in good physical condition - and a quite person, dedicated to order and keeping his personal property in good order - it has not been determined as to the cause of his demise! The police were not at liberty to discuss the on going investigation!
================================
I have seen people who passed away over the years; most of whom were mainly friends or relatives in older age.
Have also seen some who were killed over the years; it was this unexpected but with the death of a near neighbor {2 houses from ours} sets a whole new point of view on eternity!
Death is part of life and openly displayed in the entertainment industry over the years... But once you come to realize that true death is not just an act; but an occurrence which brings you to the truth of Eternity!
Things take on a much more serious and different point of view!
Having know this neighbor for over 25 years; yet not really knowing him brought a whole different consideration to mind!
I had heard a story some time ago about a person who lived in a New York townhouse for many years; and each day had seen and perhaps even exchanged pleasantries with George the front doorman... But knew nothing about him; such as was he ever married, or did he have children, where exactly did he live and where was he from? In other words George was more of a ghost or invisible person to the tenant in the townhouse Apartment.. There was no real continuity or real acknowledgment of the person of George the doorman.
I had felt bad about that situation for years; how could someone see another person almost daily and yet never really interface to come to know him?
Then with the death of our neighbor this past week - it hit me I did not really know Max, and had only spoken with him on brief occasions ... What does this say about me?
I had missed the greatest commandment!
The Greatest Commandment
…36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
…38"This is the great and foremost commandment. 39"The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' 40"On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
It is if all of Eternity came before me with this understanding of exactly what we are commanded to do in life! It is something in which we all fall short and have not been able to live up to!
'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'
How much plainer can it be folks!
